WORKSHOP 1:
Supervision Beyond Clinical Work: Facilitating Personal and Professional Development of Supervisees
August 25, 2025 (Monday)
9am - 12.30pm
Workshop Description:
The American Psychological Association (APA) defines clinical supervision as a valuable framework for ethical practice, serving as the signature pedagogy across three fundamental dimensions of professional work: thinking, performing, and acting with integrity. According to this definition, the primary focus of clinical supervision is safeguarding the profession through professionalism and ethics.
As professionals, we are thoroughly trained to recognise the humanness of struggling clients and patients. However, paradoxically, we often fail to prioritize seeing therapists, psychologists, counsellors, or practitioners as human beings themselves. Consequently, the aspect of the self—as a therapist and as a person—is seldom highlighted or intentionally facilitated within the clinical supervision process. The emphasis remains on ethical, professional, and integrative practice.
This workshop seeks to introduce an essential yet often overlooked component of supervision: supporting supervisees not only in their clinical work but also in their personal growth, both as individuals and practitioners.
The workshop is designed for mental health practitioners who have supervision training.
Learning Outcomes:
Integrate Personal and Professional Growth in Clinical Supervision – Equip clinical supervisors with strategies to facilitate personal development into the supervision process, enhancing clinical competence and self-awareness in supervisees.
Cultivate “Self as therapist” — Strengthen supervisees’ ability to develop an inner supervisor, enabling them to critically evaluate their assessment and intervention and make autonomous, ethically sound clinical decisions.
Foster a Supportive and Growth-Oriented Clinical Supervision Environment – Promote a supervisory culture that encourages ongoing self-reflection, professional growth, and clinical excellence, ensuring supervisees develop confidence in their clinical reasoning and client care.
