WORKSHOP 3:
Fostering Counseling Competence and Humility: Honoring Clients’ Faith Traditions and Spiritual Orientations: Working with Hindu, Muslim, Buddhist, Christian Clients
August 25, 2025 (Monday)
9am - 12.30pm & 1.45pm - 5pm
Workshop Overview:
This one-day workshop is designed for mental health practitioners in Malaysia to develop knowledge, self-awareness, and skills in addressing clients' religious and spiritual backgrounds during counseling. Through interactive forums featuring speakers from Buddhist, Christian, Islamic, and Hindu traditions, participants will explore strategies for fostering effective working alliances with clients while respecting their faith traditions.
Each forum will include speakers sharing personal experiences with the challenges and successes of broaching and navigating religious and spiritual topics in counseling, highlighting how they use their own self—through self-reflection, authenticity, and cultural humility—to build trust and effective therapeutic relationships. The workshop emphasizes cultural competence, self-examination, and the integration of spirituality in counseling without imposing personal beliefs.
This workshop is designed for students, practitioners, supervisors, and educators in counseling and applied psychology disciplines.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
Enhance cultural competence in counseling and therapy by understanding the influence of religious and spiritual beliefs on clients' psychological functioning and the therapeutic relationship.
Develop practical skills for integrating clients' religious or spiritual perspectives into the therapeutic process with sensitivity and professionalism.
Apply ethical guidelines to create a safe and inclusive environment for discussing religious and spiritual issues during counseling.
Engage in self-examination and preparation to approach and navigate religious and spiritual similarities and differences with self-awareness, courage, and respect for clients, recognizing the importance of the counselor’s own values and presence in fostering effective working alliances.
