SOULCARE TRAINING ACADEMY 2025

WORKSHOP 4:
Suicide Crisis – Responding, Assessing, and Intervening

August 25, 2025 (Monday)
9am - 12.30pm

Workshop Description:

Statistics from the World Health Organization reveal that over 700,000 people die by suicide globally each year, making it a significant public health concern. Suicide is also the fourth leading cause of death among individuals aged 15–29 years.

In Malaysia, the NHMS 2023 survey indicates that more than 1 million Malaysians aged 16 and above are living with depression. Alarmingly, nearly half of them report experiencing suicidal thoughts, including self-harm ideation or thoughts of being better off dead.

With the growing mental health challenges in Malaysia, it is crucial that counsellors and mental health practitioners are equipped with suicide risk assessment skills and knowledge and the competence to implement effective intervention plans and care.

Through this 7-hour training, participants will learn practical tools and strategies to navigate the complexities of suicide risk management, empowering them to make a meaningful difference in the lives of their clients.

The workshop is designed for counseling and therapy trainees (who have completed training in counseling theories and techniques), mental health practitioners, supervisors, and educators.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss cultural and contextual perspectives of suicide and intervention.

  2. Conduct a comprehensive suicide risk assessment, including identifying risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors.

  3. Demonstrate competence in implementing intervention strategies to reduce suicide risk, including crisis intervention skills and collaborative treatment planning.

  4. Initiate multisectoral collaboration within an organization to manage suicide related cases.
