SOULCARE TRAINING ACADEMY 2025
WORKSHOP 6:
Foundations of Trauma: Culturally Responsive Tools for Healing
August 26, 2025 (Tuesday)
9am - 5pm
Workshop Description:
There is growing awareness that many people have experienced trauma, including those seeking help from mental health professionals. Research shows that trauma can deeply affect our body, mind, and relationships.
This two-day workshop is for counselors and helping professionals who want to learn the basics of understanding and working with trauma. We will use an ecological perspective to explore how trauma is shaped by culture, society, and personal history. Participants will learn through hands-on activities, real-life examples, and shared experiences from the presenters’ work with trauma survivors. The training will focus on building knowledge and practical skills for providing trauma-informed and culturally sensitive care.
This workshop is designed for mental health professionals and paraprofessionals seeking to deepen their understanding of trauma, its widespread impact, and how to provide culturally attuned, effective care.
Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:
Describe key definitions, types, and impacts of trauma
Explain the physiological and neurological effects of trauma on the brain and body, including the stress and trauma response systems.
Identify culturally embedded trauma presentations and barriers to care, including stigma, gender-based violence, and substance use.
Assess trauma in clients using culturally responsive screening approaches and ecological frameworks.
Apply trauma-informed principles and foundational clinical interventions, including grounding, somatic practices, and TF-CBT techniques, to client case examples.
Evaluate the appropriateness of trauma interventions within diverse cultural contexts and develop initial treatment considerations that are client-centered and culturally attuned.
