WORKSHOP 8:
Adapting Counseling Practices for Telecounseling: Bridging Theory and Technique in Virtual Setting
August 27, 2025 (Wednesday)
9am - 5pm
Workshop Description:
As mental health practitioners (MHP) aim to meet clients where they are, MHPs require skills to provide in-person and online counseling services (i.e., telecounseling). Despite calls for telehealth standards of care, there are few guidelines for how MHPs can adapt counseling theory and techniques for telecounseling.
In this workshop, we will review general guidelines for adapting counseling techniques for telecounseling, including online therapeutic presence. Additionally, we will review and practice telecounseling strategies for emotion-focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and group counseling.
The workshop is intended for mental health practitioners, as well as counseling and therapy students who have completed training in counseling theories and techniques. It assumes that participants already have a basic understanding of telecounseling ethics and processes.
Participants will be able to:
Discuss the role of clinical decision-making in telecounseling
Identify foundational skills for telecounseling
Apply telecounseling techniques based on counseling theory
